Erie Canal - Day 3

Little Falls, NY
Today we passed through 4 locks, culminating in the guillotine Lock 17.  We are getting pretty good at boating the locks. We drive into the lock when the lock master gives the green light, I grab a line hanging by the bow (see picture of the hanging lines) and Fred grabs a line by the stern.

Here is our boat just past Lock 13 at the lock wall where we spent last night.

The last lock we went through today was Lock 17, the guillotine lock. Not only does the gate rise
and the boat goes under it, but it is the highest single lift in the Erie Canal with a lift of 40 feet.

To see the gate rising check out my video:  No. 17 - the Guillotine Lock

    1. Yes it is impressive and a little daunting! 😳

    1. It was a little disconcerting being inside that lock 40 feet from the top. And nowhere to go until it filled with water and let us out.

  3. Glad you made it through lock 17 without issue, amazing process.
    Happy 4th, smooth sailing :)

    1. You’re right. I was worried for nothing. Although this is the lock that a crane was raising the door last week. 😬
