Harbor Beach, MI
We left St. Clair Shores and cruised up the rest of the St. Clair River and into Lake Huron. Check out its history here: https://www.michigan.org/great-lakes/lake-huron

| Time for us to learn something. Michigan is made up of two parts - the Mitten and the Upper Peninsula (UP). We are currently on the Thumb (of the Mitten). |
The weather on Lake Huron can change dramatically and quickly. And there are not many natural harbors for a boat to get out of the weather. The rivers are short and do not have natural harbors. The marina that we were in last night in the Black River only had slips in a row along the side of the River. So the State of Michigan has developed man-made harbors (Harbors of Refuge) approximately every 20 miles along the shoreline. The marina we are in now is one of these. They build a long breakwater wall around a large area. Then they build a marina in it. And a boater cannot be turned away during a storm. We can anchor inside of the breakwater wall if nothing else. So can the freighters.

My memory of working in Detroit Michigan area several years ago (as a Floridian) was hearing the locals talk about “up North.” I thought we were already there. They meant the UP. I guess you’re heading up North for the next few days.
ReplyDelete😂 I get it. There’s a whole new language up here. You can live on the Thumb, the Mitten, or the UP (Upper Peninsula). We are definitely heading north up and around the Mitten.
