Lake Oneida
We had a break from the locks today. After our interesting day yesterday, it was nice to leave the confines of the Canal and enter into the wide open water of Lake Oneida. It is 20 miles long, and 4 miles wide at its widest point.
It’s a different experience being in fresh water. Without the swells or other boats’ wakes, it was a calm trip for the 20 miles.
There were the cutest summer cottages on either end of Lake Oneida and they each seem to have a small boat, usually a pontoon boat. We were by far the largest boat in sight.
With only a 3-hour cruise, we came to our marina for 2 nights. Up here, the marinas usually have a “courtesy car” that you can borrow for up to 2 hours. So yesterday afternoon we went to re-provision. It’s supposed to thunderstorm today, so we plan to stay put. Fred has ordered a gasket for our front hatch (sorely needed, right MR?), which will arrive Wednesday. It’s a really nice marina, Esskay Marina, and it’s just off the west end of Lake Oneida. It’s family owned, and the owners came to help us dock. We are with several other boats of like size who are also Looping, and we will all go to dinner tonight.

Freshwater cruising - I guess that is a new experience. Sounds lovely. And hurricane-free, unlike the East coast for the next few days.
ReplyDeleteYes, that is my thought too. This is the first time we’ve done freshwater cruising since we left Minnesota and our 18 ft. bow rider. We’ll be close to Lake Ontario when we stop today which supposedly has all the things salt water has, except the salt. 🤔
