Mentor, OH

Ashtabula, OH was full, Geneva-by-the-Lake was full (the normal Looper marinas), so a 5.5 hr. trip to Mentor, OH was our goal for today.  It was another uncomfortable ride on Lake Erie. For some reason, the wind keeps blowing the swells to hit us broadside, which can make the passengers feel ill.

For those of you following Fred’s tour of nuclear power plants, here is the Perry Nuclear Power Station, in Perry, OH.

Mentor Harbor on Sunday afternoon is a hopping place. Mentor Harbor Yacht Club put us in their Annex, which has some open slips. Fred got to use some special electrical equipment so we could have power. More on that later.

In the 1920’s, the Mentor marsh was dredged to create the Mentor Harbor and a development such as those in Florida.  Lots of peninsulas so everyone can have waterfront property. They finished a beautiful yacht club, but the rest of the development was unsuccessful.

Mentor Harbor doesn’t seem to be on the Looper circuit, given that Taurus is the only Loop boat here. Fred tried to get reservations at the marinas where the other Looper boats were going, but they were all full.

There are hundreds of pleasure boats from Sea-doos to cigarette boats, all under 40 ft, most under 30 ft. This is certainly the busiest Marina we have stayed at so far, although we haven’t had that many weekends in the summer yet.

  1. What was your fallback if you could not reserve a slip at the Mentor Harbor Yacht Club?
