Monroe, Michigan and the Regatta

The sunrise in Sandusky was beautiful this morning. |
We couldn’t get in our first choice marina in Monroe, MI, so we are at the Monroe Boat Club marina. We should have known this would be an interesting Marina, when they told Fred over the phone that they were putting us on the “banana dock”. Fred found this marina at a little out of the way channel in Booles Harbor. It turns out this was a good thing, as this boat club is holding their annual Regatta this weekend. (In New England a regatta is a series of races). Fred asked when the races are and there aren’t any. In Michigan, a regatta is a party! It’s their biggest money-maker and there’s walleye for dinner. They expect to serve 3,000 people 😮. There will be DJ’s and a band tonight and tomorrow. We just extended our stay to 2 nights so we can join in the fun. And, since we’re here for their Regatta, our dockage is free. So far, Michigan people are great.
Update: we attended the walleye fish fry and it was delicious. The DJ was playing and a live band will end the evening. Tomorrow morning is a heart attack breakfast and smoked chicken for lunch and dinner. One of the club members was showing us pictures of all the walleye they caught. The club members went out and caught all the walleye for tonight. And then 6 guys used electric knives to fillet the fish. And they had to change the knife blades halfway through due to filleting so many fish.

“Heart attack breakfast” - just we need to have as we get older!
ReplyDeleteNonetheless I have loved to participate in the regatta as you described it.
Agreed! And once in a blue moon doesn’t hurt anyone. Biscuits with sausage gravy, sausages, bacon, pancakes, eggs, assorted pastries, oh, and cut fruit. It’s been a hopping place with the club members putting on the current event as others put together the next event. And we had groceries delivered this morning too. We have found it wise to take advantage of two nights in port and restock.
DeleteHi, Lisa and I have been keeping track of you -- envious of your adventures. We have been getting some welcome rain. Lisa is going to Montana this next week to visit a friend. Fun keeping in touch, Aunt Ruth
