Goodbye Great Lakes!

We left the Great Lakes today, so I thought this graphic will remind us of what we did

Today we left Waukegan, Illinois (just north of Chicago) and cruised south to the end of Lake Michigan.  It was windy but as we were heading into it, the chop was not too bad.

Outside of Chicago, in Lake Michigan water, we saw three objects.  We know what they are, but do you?  Note - they are fresh water intakes for people.

We left Lake Michigan at the entrance to the Calumet River.

And said hello to the inland rivers of the Great Loop.

We very shortly came to seven bridges. The first two were already open for us, otherwise we would have had to call for an opening. It’s a weird feeling to have all traffic stopped on the bridges, then they go up and Taurus goes under them.

The next three were high enough that we could go under them. And the last two we had to call for them to open.

The Calumet River has a lot of industry on the banks. At one point, we had to pull off to the side to allow a tugboat pushing a barge to get by.

Now, today was one of the hottest days we have had since we embarked on this adventure. “Feels Like 104 degrees”?!  Aaugh!!  I don’t do well in heat and humidity..

Feels like 104?  Yikes!

So what did we spend the afternoon doing?  We had to try to fish the antennae cable for the marine radio through the boat’s insides. We were up and down the boat including up on the fly bridge trying to fish that cable. In the end, we spent all afternoon and it didn’t work. 😞

Our attempt to fish a wire to the fly bridge.

  1. Hopefully it will start getting cooler for you on Monday. Unfortunately the heavy rain we had on Sunday morning will continue to make it more humid. A cold front is supposed to come through on Sun. night. The 3 objects in the water off the Chicago shore are for water intake, also called water cribs. Travel safely and I hope you get your marine radio fixed.

    1. Thank you! Yes, the water cribs provide fresh water to the towns and cities. I had never seen them before but they are quite impressive as we cruised by them. Not something you see on the coast, as we have salt water there. Not good for drinking!
