Smithville, MS

Today, November 15, is the last day we need to be north of the 33.8 degrees Parallel for our boat insurance. Apparently, we didn’t negotiate that very well, because no one else we’ve met has this stipulation.  ðŸ¤” 

This morning we woke up to fog again.



But isn’t it beautiful here?
We planned to leave around 9:00 am as we only had an 18 mile trip and one lock today. Before 9:00 Fred came to get me as he had talked to the lock master who told him that if we left for the lock now, we’d get through; otherwise it would be quite a wait.  So Fred went out on deck to get the lines ready to go. I was inside and heard the lock master asking if there were any boats at our marina who wanted to lock through and to come on now. We were only three miles north of the lock. Then I heard another Looper on the radio telling the lock master that Taurus was coming. Then the Looper asked if Taurus was listening. As Fred didn’t answer, I got on the radio, for the first time ever, and said that yes, we had copied that, and we’re leaving the dock now.  Then we had about a 15 minute trip to get to the lock. So 4 boats were waiting for us!  And no one was angry. To be fair, the other Loopers had already been there two hours waiting for a tug. So we arrived at Smithville Marina before lunch. 😂 







We came upon a 9-barge tow going the same direction we were going. Fred called him and we passed on his starboard side. Being in this river, it was more narrow than we’ve had before. So we got a good look, and pictures!



The marina we are in is small. However it has new docks. 

The story is that they had 80 mph winds which whipped up 5 ft. waves that pulled up the 40-year old 2 ft. docks. So they got new docks that are only 2 months old. 


And, since they had that bad storm, there are several boats with problems now. 

Makes us count our blessings.

    It is nice to have buddies who will wait for you. I totally support the buddy system :)
    Glad you boat is ok and not like the ones under water. Maybe a good thing you have the Nov. 16th insurance provision.

      Thanks, Peg, I knew I could count on you to look at the bright side! Buddy boats are great. Our son also had battle buddies in the Army. The buddy system works. 😃

Melbourne, Florida - Our Winter Home

We made it to Melbourne, FL, Taurus’s home for the next three and a half months!  Melbourne is also where our son lives, so we are going to get some good time in seeing him this winter. So great!!  We saw him after work and for dinner today.  It’s been too long. We need Covid-19 to be done please! We left Fort Pierce this morning and had an uneventful cruise.  We saw an old favorite - a tug pushing a barge! We saw some more electric wires crossing the bay for those in the barrier islands. Once we were settled in our new marina, Fred and I took a walk to the Eau Gallie Art District (EGAD). We walked through an older residential neighborhood. There were Aloe Vera plants that are humongous! Aloe Vera plants in the neighborhood near our marina Plus there were cactus There were a couple of historic signs And at the end of the night - Christmas lights!

Georgetown, SC and Rice!

We spent today in Georgetown, because for the next few days there won’t be much to go see.  We went to the Rice Museum where the  Brown’s Ferry Vessel remnants are located.  It sank in the 18th century in Black River carrying 25 tons of bricks made on a plantation. Artifacts, including green glass English wine bottles, oars, millstones, iron pots, a straight razor and smoking pipes made of gourds.  The items enabled historians to date the time of its sinking to between 1730 and 1740. This period is about 50 years earlier than previous American shipbuilding discoveries.
