On Monday, May 2, Doug and Rorie cruised with us to Manteo (Man-ee-o) otherwise known as Roanoke Island, place of Sir Walter Raleigh’s Lost Colony.

North Carolina is notorious for having shoals (moving sandbars). And we found some of them on the way in to Manteo. We actually bumped into one. The channel markers are odd. They have the regular green and red markers, but also added a red marker halfway between them π€¨. By the way, Fred does know how to curse π.
The establishment of the Roanoke Colony was an attempt by Sir Walter Raleigh to found the first permanent English settlement in North America in 1587. Three years later upon Raleigh’s return, the colony had disappeared, and the only clue was “Croatan” carved in a tree.

Since it was a Monday, a lot of things were closed, like the park showing what life was like in 1587. But that didn’t stop us from having fun.

With Doug around, you spend a lot of time laughing. I was in the galley (kitchen) and he came up the stairs wearing my sun hat just before bedtime! π too funny!

Doug's goal is to be sure everyone is having a great time! Nice hat 'bro! |
