Cape May, NJ - beach town

Our next leg of this Great Loop journey is for Taurus to pass through New Jersey. Cape May is the southernmost tip of the state. In order to do this, we must travel on the “outside” (in the Atlantic Ocean) due to the ICW being too shallow for our 4.5 ft draft (waterline to the absolute bottom of the boat - in our case - the propellers).  According to locals, you’ll be lucky if the depth of the NJ ICW is 3 ft. Apparently, the State of New Jersey doesn’t dredge the ICW as the other states do. 

Now, if you have been reading this blog, you are probably aware that the Atlantic Ocean and I are not on good terms. Every single time, personal vessel and cruise ships, as soon as the boat turns into the Atlantic, I get seasick.  So I am not looking forward to tomorrow.  The plan is to leave the dock at 6:00 am.  The weather is calling for wind at 10-15 knots with 20 knot gusts, out of the north, and 2-3 ft swells. We have 144 miles to travel.  

But, if all goes well, tomorrow we will “cross our wake” which means we will officially finish the Great Loop.  Liberty Harbor (Statue of Liberty) is where we officially started the Loop 11 months ago.  

Today we had a day off, so we went to the Washington Street Mall.  It’s all outside, beachy stores and restaurants.  The weather was great and we enjoyed our time on land.  Cape May is an old town and has a lot of interesting buildings.

Melbourne, Florida - Our Winter Home

We made it to Melbourne, FL, Taurus’s home for the next three and a half months!  Melbourne is also where our son lives, so we are going to get some good time in seeing him this winter. So great!!  We saw him after work and for dinner today.  It’s been too long. We need Covid-19 to be done please! We left Fort Pierce this morning and had an uneventful cruise.  We saw an old favorite - a tug pushing a barge! We saw some more electric wires crossing the bay for those in the barrier islands. Once we were settled in our new marina, Fred and I took a walk to the Eau Gallie Art District (EGAD). We walked through an older residential neighborhood. There were Aloe Vera plants that are humongous! Aloe Vera plants in the neighborhood near our marina Plus there were cactus There were a couple of historic signs And at the end of the night - Christmas lights!

Georgetown, SC and Rice!

We spent today in Georgetown, because for the next few days there won’t be much to go see.  We went to the Rice Museum where the  Brown’s Ferry Vessel remnants are located.  It sank in the 18th century in Black River carrying 25 tons of bricks made on a plantation. Artifacts, including green glass English wine bottles, oars, millstones, iron pots, a straight razor and smoking pipes made of gourds.  The items enabled historians to date the time of its sinking to between 1730 and 1740. This period is about 50 years earlier than previous American shipbuilding discoveries.
