Corolla, NC — Family, Horses and Lighthouse

On Sunday, May 1, we went to see the Outer Banks Wild Spanish Mustang Horses on a Hummer tour. From Spain’s early colonization attempts, Spanish mustangs were left in Corolla (Cah-ral-la) on the ocean side.  The wild horses have been thriving in Corolla for five hundred years.

They’ve been tracking it for years, and we finally came across the elusive five legged horse

There are 900 residents of Corolla living amongst the wild horses in the sand dunes.

People are not allowed to feed the horses, or get within 50 feet of them, but it happens all the time. They give a horse an apple, and it can make them sick or even die.  And if a horse needs medical attention outside of Corolla, it can never return due to possibly carrying disease from the outside world.  If you ever get a chance to do this tour, we highly recommend it.

After the horses, we went to the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. It was built in 1875 to fill in the last “dark space” on the East Coast.  It still has the original Fresnel lens.  The lighthouse is 162’ high with 220 steps.  Fred climbed it.

Oh, yes, there you are!

Later in the day, we drove back to the boat to get ready to cruise Monday.
